BORN HULL 1895. SON OF HENRY & ANNIE TAYLOR, OF 16 CHESTNUT AVENUE, BUCKINGHAM STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A DOCK LABOURER, ELDEST OF TWO SONS. BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS AN APPRENTICE HAIR DRESSER, WORKING FOR MESSRS, L. A. RICHARDSONS, OF 279 HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL.
HE ENLISTED WITH HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, HERBERT, IN HULL, ON 29/02/1916. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 1117, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 10TH WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 31/10/1916, AGED 22. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 23RD NOVEMBER 1916.
GEORGE HENRY TAYLOR WAS A ‘HULL HARRIER’ AND RAN IN THE EIGHT MILE HANDICAP RACE HELD ON THE 21/02/1914. HE WAS ONE OF SIX MEN OUT OF THE 19 RUNNERS IN THE RACE TO DIE IN THE GREAT WAR.
HIS BROTHER, HERBERT TAYLOR, TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 31016, LABOUR CORPS AND SURVIVED THE WAR.
