BORN HORNSEA 1878. SON OF SAMUEL WHATLING (1845-1915) AND EMMA PEARCE (1859-1917), OF 45, MARLBOROUGH AVENUE, HORNSEA. THE SON OF A FARM LABOURER, CHARLES WAS ONE OF 13 CHILDREN. THE FAMILY ORIGINATED FROM GOXHILL AND MOVED TO HULL.

CHARLES MARRIED AT HULL, IN 19o8. HIS WIFE, ROSAMOND WHATLING AND SON JOHN, LIVED AT 27, SOMERSCALES STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS) & 5 FLORENCE TERRACE, GRANGE STREET, HULL. SHE LATER MOVED TO 16, BELLAMY STREET, HULL & TE SCULCOATES WORKHOUSE, BEVERLEY ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES).

A FORMER LABOURER IN A PRINT WORKS (1911 CENSUS). HE ENLISTED AS PRIVATE, 11600, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 44000, IN THE DUBLIN FUSILIERS. HE WAS AWARDED THE BRITISH WAR MEDAL AND VICTORY MEDAL.

HE DIED OF TONGUE CANCER, ON 17/11/1919, AGED 41, HE IS BURIED AT HULL’S HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HIS CWGC GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD”.

AT LEAST TWO OF HIS BROTHERS SERVED IN WW1. DRIVER, GEORGE WHATLING, 771704, C Battery, 250th Brigade, RFA, WHO DIED AS A PRISONER OF WAR ON 01/10/1918 AND IS BURIED IN BERLIN SOUTH WESTERN CEMETERY. ANOTHER BROTHER, JOHN (JACK) WHATLIING, ENLISTED UNDERAGE, ALSO SERVED WITH THE DUBLIN FUSILIERS AT GALLIPOLI AND SURVIVED THE WAR.
