BORN BEVERLEY, ON 14/09/1887. SON OF CHARLES ARTHUR WIDDAS (1860-1909) AND CHRISTIAN WELBURN (1861-1931). ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. HIS MOTHER WAS THE WIDOWED LANDLADY OF THE “DOG AND DUCK” PUB, IN BEVERLEY.
HE WAS A HOUSE AND SHIP PAINTER. HE MARRIED ALICE MAUD SCHOFIELD, AT BEVERLEY, ON 01/10/1911. THEY HAD TWO SONS, ARTHUR AND SIDNEY.
HE ENLISTED IN BEVERLEY. SERVED WITH THE 5TH YORKSHIRE HUSSARS. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 15/09/1916, AGED 29. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, TO THE MISSING, ON THE SOMME.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ALICE, WHO REMARRIED, ON 20/04/1918, BECAME MRS TAIT AND MOVED TO 39 MILL LANE, BEVERLEY (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BEVERLEY WAR MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS AND THE NORWOOD STREET MEMORIAL, BEVERLEY.
HE WAS THE ONLY WIDDAS ON THE WW1 CWGC RECORDS. HIS MOTHER, CHRISTIANA, CONTINUED TO RUN THE DOG & DUCK PUB, UNTIL HER DEATH, ON 19/02/1931 (PROBATE ADDRESS).
