Born Hougham, Lincolnshire, 1890. Son of Frederick and Fanny Hallam, of Marston, Grantham, Lincs. Son of a Farm Labourer. He had nine brothers and one sister, Mildred.
Worked as a footman. Enlisted in the 3rd dragoon Guards, on 1st June 1909, aged 21. Described as 5 foot, 7.5 “, 141 lbs weight, 35-38” Chest, “Very Good” Physical development. Had served 7 years with the Colours and was a Reservist. Was working as a Railway Signalman in Nottingham (1911 Census). Living in Hull when war began.
He enlisted in Hull. Served as a Sergeant with the 13th East Yorkshire Regiment (4th Hull Pals). Awarded the Military Medal (MM) for bravery. Killed at Serre, on 13/11/1916, aged 28. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
His younger brother, Private, Leonard Octavious Hallam, 17266, 9th KOYLI, was killed on 23rd March 1916.
