Allenby, William Thorley

BORN HULL, ON  05/02/1896. SON OF DAVID ALLENBY (1842-1904) & ELLEN BROWN (1861-1950), OF 31 MAYFIELD STREET & 7 PRINCES AVENUE, WHEELER STREET, HULL. HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND FOUR SISTERS. HE EMIGRATED TO CANADA AGED 18, WITH HIS BROTHER IN 1913 TO WORK FOR THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY. HE LIVED AT, 1521 ALBERNI STREET, VANCOUVER. HE ENLISTED WITH HIS BROTHER IN 1914. SERVED IN THE 7TH CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. HIS ELDER BROTHER, GEORGE ALLENBY, SERVED IN THE SAME 7TH BATTALION AND WAS KILLED BY THE SAME SHELL, SAME DAY. WILLIAM WAS WOUNDED IN THE HAND, BUT KILLED BY MACHINE GUN FIRE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 27TH OCTOBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.*

BOTH BROTHERS ARE COMMEMORATED ON THE VIMY WAR MEMORIAL, GIVENCHY, FRANCE.
