Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOHN EDWARD ALLISON, MM 11/802. Born in Barton-upon-Humber in 1893 John was the eldest of two children and only son of Florence Allison of 7 Lockes Place, Chapel Lane, Hull. John’s father died when he was just a toddler and Florence remarried. A Labourer by trade he enlisted at Hull City Hall on Thursday 10th September 1914 joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. John survived Egypt, the Somme and Oppy Wood without a scratch but his luck ran out on 12th April 1918 as the Pals were sent to plug a gap in the line and walked into the full force of the German Spring Offensive. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial; he was 25 years old. John is also commemorated on the Roll of Honour in St. Mary’s Church on Lowgate in Hull.
