John Andrew (1887-1916)

BORN HULL 1887. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM ANDREW (1854-1917) & GEORGINA SANDYS (1853-1930), OF 38 WESTBOURNE AVENUE, HULL. ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. BROTHERS ARTHUR, FRANK, HENRY AND WILLIAM AND SISTER ANNIE AT 38 WESTBOURNE AVENUE. EDUCATED AT HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL. HE WAS A KEEN OARSMAN WITH THE KINGSTON ROWING CLUB, HULL. A FORMER ACCOUNTANT WITH THE HULL & BARNSLEY RAILWAY LINE, CHARLOTTE STREET, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN MARCH 1915. TRAINED AT BEDFORD, ALDERSHOT AND BROCKLESBY. PROMOTED TO 2ND LIEUTENANT AND TRANSFERRED TO THE 3RD KING OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 29/05/1916. HE LED HIS MEN ‘OVER THE TOP’ ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME AND WAS KILLED THE SAME DAY ON THE 1ST JULY 1916, AGED 29. (On 1 Jul 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the 8th Division attacked Ovillers and the 34th Division La Boisselle. The villages were not captured, but ground was won between them and to the south of La Boisselle).

HE HAD MARRIED AT ST AUGUSTINES CHURCH HULL, ON 10/06/1915, AGED 29. HIS WIDOW DOROTHY HYDE (1887-1981) LIVED AT 47 PARK AVENUE, HULL (PROBATE ADDRESS). HE LEFT £431 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW DOROTHY AT 47 PARK AVENUE.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HDM ON 11/09/1916.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL WW1 MEMORIAL.
