Patrington WW1 Memorial Tablet, St Patrick’s Church, Patrington.

Born Patrington, 1887. Son of James Appleby (1852-1892) and Carrie Ann Binnington (1854-1937), of Market Place, Patrington. He had one older brother, john. Worked as a waggoner and Farm labourer at Wesley House Patrington. Described as 5 foot, 6.5 inches tall, 36-38 inch chest, 154 lbs weight and “good” physical development.

He enlisted at Hull, on 20/11/1915. Called up on 29/02/1916. Posted to France, on 13/07/1916. Served in the 7th East Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action, on 05/11/1916, aged 30. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, to the missing on the Somme battlefields. His army effects were left to his widowed mother, Cariie Annie Aplleby.

He is remembered on the Patrington WW1 Memorial at St Patrick’s Church. 111 men served and 24 were killed.
