Appleton, Henry Hodgson

Private Henry Hodgson Appleton (1890-1916). Originally from Raskelf, North Yorkshire. Son of Mr. James Henry Appleton (1860-1911) and Mrs. Annie August Hodgson (1864-1944), of Raskelf, Easingwold, Yorks. One of six children. He later lived in Hull and worked as a draper’s assistant. Employee of Messrs. Edwin Davis & Co., 42 Market St., Hull.

Hodgson first served in the East Riding Yeomanry in 1910, re-enlisted in 1914, but later ended up as a Corporal, in the 1st East Yorkshire regiment. He was killed on 1st July 1916 during the battle of the Somme.

He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
