BORN SCULCOATES, HULL, 26/06/1899. SON OF FREDERICK JAMES ASHBY & HARRIET ANN GRASSAM OF 8 WILLOW GROVE, BEVERLEY (1911 CENSUS) AND THIS CWGC ADDRESS. SON OF A BICYCLE MAKER, WHO RAN A BUSINESS AT 43 PARAGON STREET, HULL. HIS FAMILY MOVED TO BEVERLEY. HE WAS EDUCATED AT BEVERLEY GARAMMAR SCHOOL AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE BEVERLEY, CHURCH LADS BRIGADE. ONE OF TWO SONS BOTH KILLED IN THE WAR. HE JOINED THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS, ON 26/06/1917, AGED 17. COMMISSIONED INTO THE ROYAL AIR FORCE, ON 27/04/1918. HE HAD ONLY 12 HOURS FLYING EXPERIENCE, WHEN HE WAS KILLED IN A FLYING ACCIDENT, IN FRANCE, ON 04/07/1918, AGED 19. HIS PLANE TOOK OFF AND THEN NOSEDIEVED, BURSTING IN FLAMES. HE WAS KILLED WITH HIS PILOT. HE WAS UNMARRIED.

HIS BROTHER, 2/LT, DONALD JESSE ASHBY, 4TH EYR, WAS KILLED ON 17/07/1916, AGED 18.
