BORN HULL 1877. SON OF JOHN ASHLEY (1845-1889) AND EMMA HANNAH ROBINSON (1840-1920). BROTHER TO WILLIAM, RACHEL AND MARTHA. HE MARRIED ADA THEAKSTONE, AT ST ANDREWS CHURCH, DRYPOOL, ON 02/08/1902. HIS WIFE ADA, LIVED 18 SOUTHCOATES LANE, WITH THEIR THREE CHILDREN ALBERT EDWARD, EVA AND WILLIAM ARTHUR ASHLEY. A LABOURER AND MEMBER OF THE HULL DISTRICT FREE GARDENER SOCIETY. HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 21/11/1914, AGED 37 YEARS AND 8 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, 37 INCH CHEST, 133 LBS WEIGHT AND A ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.
THIS WAS HIS HULL ARMY ADDRESS. HE TRAINED AT BEVERLEY AND RIPON. TRANSFERRED WITH THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, TO EGYPT, ON 15/12/1916. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 08/03/1916. PROMOTED TO LANCE CORPORAL. RECEIVED MULTIPLE SHRAPNEL WOUNDS TO HEAD, NECK, CHEST AND ARMS. DIED OF WOUNDS, SAME DAY, ON 08/05/1916, AGED 39, AT ST JOHNS HOSPITAL ETAPLES. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR ONE YEAR AND 170 DAYS. HIS WIDOW WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 23 SHILLINGS FOR HERSELF AND THREE CHILDREN AT THIS ADDRESS, ON 20/11/1916.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 08/05/1917 & 08/05/1918.
BURIED AT GEZAINCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, ON THE SOMME. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “BELOVED HUSBAND OF ADA ASHLEY, HE LIVES WITH ME IN MEMORY, AND WILL FOR EVERMORE”.
