Ashwell, William

Withernsea WW1 Memorial, Queens Street. The memorial was erected in 1923 at a cost of £451, the funds for which were collected through public subscription. A service of dedication was held in 1924. Inscribed in four columns, are the names of sixty-four men killed in World War I.

BORN MIDLOTHIAN, 1880. SON OF ROBERT TILSON ASHWELL (1845-1898) & MARTHA ANN ASHWELL (1852-1926), OF HULL. ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. HIS BROTHER LIVED AT 69 , QUEEN STREET, HULL. A REFRESHMENT HOUSE KEEPER. HE RAN AN OYSTER SHOP FROM 69 QUEEN STREET AND WAS POPULARLY KNOWN AS “BILL STONES”.

HE WAS THE HUSBAND OF ANNIE ASHWELL, OF 61 ARTHUR STREET, WITHERNSEA.THE HAD ONE SON, ALSO CALLED WILLIAM. A REFRESHMENT HOUSE KEEPER. ENLISTED IN BEVERLEY. SERVED IN FRANCE WITH THE 12TH/13TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. WOUNDED AND TAKEN PRISONER. HE HAD HIS LEFT LEG AMPUTATED. DIED OF WOUNDS ON 18/06/1918, AGED 38. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ANNIE.
BURIED AT SISSONNE BRITISH CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “GOD BE WITH YOU TILL WE MEET AGAIN”.
