Pte, George Henry Austin, 13th EYR

Born Barton, Lincs, 1887. Eldest son of Robert Stamper & Edith Austin, of 15, Tennyson Avenue, Ferries Street, Hull. He had four brothers, John, Gilbert Austin, Harold and Ernest Anthony, and one sister, Ellen Austin.

Married at St Marks, Church, Hull, on 12/10/1911. Husband of Alice Maud Kirk, at 6, Clarence Avenue, St Mark Street, Hull (Army and War Pension address). Before the war, he worked as a Labourer at Hull’s Alexandra Dock. He was described as 5 foot, 7.5 inches tall, 38.5 inch chest, 187 lbs weight, very good physical development

He enlisted in the (Hull Pals), at Hull City Hall, on 5/12/1914, aged 28 years and 6 months. Served in Egypt and France with the 13th East Yorkshire Regiment. Reported missing, taken prisoner and then killed in action at Serre, on 13/11/1916, aged 29. He is buried in France.

His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail, on 24/07/1917. His name is listed on the St Mark Street Roll of Honour. he had served in the army for one year and 344 days. His army effects (an identity disc) were left to his wife, Alice Maud.

He left a widow and child. George’s only child, Margaret, died on 09/02/1918 aged 4 yrs. His widow remarried and became Mrs Medforth.
One of 4 brothers who served. His brother, Private, John Thomas Austin, a ship yard labourer, served as Private,4760, 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment and was killed on the Somme, on 15/09/1916, aged 27. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing, France.

His brother, Signaller, Harold Austin, served with the East Riding Yeomanry. Another brother, Private, Gilbert Austin, West Yorkshire Regiment, served in France for eleven months, but now worked in munitions. Gilbert Austin, a boiler maker, played for Hull Kingson Rover Rugby League Team between 1919-1928 and scored 163 tries.
