Avery, Stephen Fredrick

BORN RAMSGATE 1886. WIFE BERTHA LOUISA AVERY (NEE LIKINS). SON OF ROBERT & THE LATE FLORENCE AVERY. SHIP STRUCK A MINE 36 MILES N.E. OF SPURN POINT.
Eros, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Beverley in 1903 and owned at the time of her loss by Great Northern Steamship Fishing Co. Ltd., Hull, was a British trawler of 181 tons. In 1917 the EROS was requisitioned by the Royal Navy as a fishing trawler (Fishery Reserve).
On June 8th, 1918, Eros was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-40 (Hermann Menzel), 36 miles ENE of Spurn Point, Firth of Forth. 6 persons were lost. The mine was from ‘barrage 45’ and laid on June 8, 1918.
