Banks, Robert

Born Hull, 28/12/1873. Son of Robert Bolton Banks (1844-1889) and Eliza jane Dean, of 30 Clifton Terrace, Hull.

On 16/07/1896, he joined the Royal Navy, as Engine Room Artificer 4th class.

Aged 24, he married Sarah Elizabeth Shipp, on 07/01/1897, at Parish Church of St Mary Strood, Kent, England. Their address was 13 Friary Place, Strood. His occupation given as Engine Room Artificer Royal Navy His father Robert Banks (chemist) her father Frederick John Shipp ,(bargeman) both deceased.

On 30 Apr 1899, he transferred to HMS Forte, served in her during the Boer War, and promoted to Engine Room Artificer 3rd class on 9th November 1899. He died at sea, on 27 Feb 1915, of Stoke Adams Disease. Buried at Suva old cemetery, Fiji,

He was by then an Engine Room Artificer 1st Class, service number 7693, Royal Australian Navy HMAS “Encounter”, on loan from RN/268806 Royal Navy. Awarded the Long service and Good Conduct Medal. Husband of Sarah Elizabeth Banks of 57 High St, Portsmouth.

His probate was settled on 3 Sep 1915 • London, England. His address being 60 Kitchener Road, Stroud, Kent and Royal Australian Navy ship Encounter. He left £109 1s 11d to his widow and five children
