Born Birmingham, 1897. Son of William and Lucy Barber, of 6, Park Square, Marlborough Terrace, Beverley Road, Hull (army records address), 5, Joseph Place, Hull (War Pension address) and Newport. An iron worker. Described as 5 foot, 4.5 inches tall, 35-37 inch chest, 120 lbs weight, blue eyes, brown hair, Baptist religion.

He enlisted Newport, Monmouthshire, on 10/08/1914. Served with the 3rd Brigade, (Northumbrian) Royal Field Artillery. Posted to France, on 15/12/1914. Posted to Alexandria, on 05/11/1915. Posted to Salonika, 21/11/1915. Returned to England, on 22/12/1916. Died of Malaria, at the Cardiff Western General Hospital, on 18/06/1917, aged 20. He is buried at Newport (St Woolos) Cemetery. He had served in the army for 2 years and 313 days.
