BORN BARROW ON HUMBER 1895.SON OF BENJAMIN & EMILY J BARNABY, BARTON ON HUMBER. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED FOR BLUNDELLS PAINT WORKS. HIS ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS WAS 2 HYMERS GROVE, WEST PARADE.

MATTHEW ENLISTED IN THE 3RD HULL PALS, ON 16/11/1914. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 13/35, 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. THIS HULL PALS BATTALION STARTED RECRUITING ON 29/08/1914. HE EMBARKED FOR EGYPT ON 15/12/1915, TO DEFEND THE SUEZ CANAL.  HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 21 AND IS BURIED AT QUEENS CEMETERY, PUISIEUX, FRANCE.
