Barwick, John Henry

BORN HULL 1882. SON OF SUSANNAH (O’HARA) & THOMAS BARWICK, (A SMACK SKIPPER DROWNED 11/04/1912). BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS ON HULL FISH DOCKS AND HAD SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE TRANSFERRED TO BECOME A TRAWLER TRIMMER, AND WAS LOST AT SEA ON 26/06/1916, AGED 35. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 29/06/1916, 03/07/1916 & 26/06/1917. HIS BROTHERS JIM, FRED & WILL, ALSO SERVED. HIS BROTHER, WILLIAM BARWICK SERVED ON MINESWEEPERS FOR 4 YEARS AND 5 MONTHS DURING THE WAR AND WAS BLOWN UP TWICE, BEING LOST AT SEA ON THE TRAWLER “GRENADA”, ON 08/01/1920.
HMT Tugela, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Hull in 1900 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 233 tons. On June 26th, 1916, HMT Tugela was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-1 (Kurt Ramien), off Lowestoft. 8 persons were lost.
