James Thomas Batty, RNR HMT ‘DE LA POLE’, lost 04/02/1916, aged 35. Eastbourne Street, Hull

Born Hull, on 05/08/1880. Baptised on 04 Nov 1880. Son of Thomas Batty and Elizabeth Pierce, of 10, Crown Place Wassand Street, Hull and 19, Rugby Street Hessle Road, Hull..

He married on 17-09-1902 at St Johns, Newington, Hull. Husband of Ada Batty (1879-1961), of 6, Palm Grove, Eastbourne Street, Hessle Road, Hull. They had four children, Ada, Edith, James and Frederick.

Worked as a Marine Engineer. Served as an Engineman on the Trawler “De La Pole”. Vessel was wrecked on the Goodwin Sands 4 Feb 1916, while mine sweeping. The deal lifeboat went to the vessel in response to distress signals, the De La Pole was full of water and of her 12 man crew 8 were lashed to the rigging, the vessel was breaking up rapidly, but by means of lifeline the crew were taken aboard the lifeboat although one man was fatally injured while doing so.

He is commemorated on the Hessle Road, Naval Memorial Board, Hull. His name is inscribed on St John The Baptist, WW1 memorial, Newington, Hull.
