George Danby Bell was born in Etton on 27 December 1897 to Herbert William Bell, a farm labourer, and Sarah Ann Bell, of Swanland, North Ferriby.
Three years after he was born he was living with his parents in Hessle and 10 years later, at the time of the 1911 Census, the family were in North Ferriby. By that time George had a sister, Edith, and a brother Fred.
He joined the Royal Navy at the beginning of March 1916, but just over 2 months later, he contracted Measles and then, 3 days later, Broncho-pneumonia. He died in the Naval Hospital Haslar, on 24 May 1916 and is buried in the graveyard of All Saints Church, North Ferriby. He was 19 years old.
HMS Victory was the name given to the Naval Depot at Portsmouth
