SON OF RIBY BIRCH AND MARY ELIZABETH BIRCH, AT 19 BECKSIDE, BEVERLEY, EAST RIDING (CWGC ADDRESS). ENLISTED BEVERLEY. SERVED IN THE 4TH YORKSHIRE REIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION ON 25/04/1917, AGED 35.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON BEVERLEY’S WW1 MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS.

James ‘Jim’ Birch was born in Beverley on 31 July 1885.

He was son of Riby and Mary Ann Birch. He enlisted with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment and then transferred to the 7th Battalion.

Private Jim Birch, aged 31, of the 7th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action near Arras on 25 April 1917.
