Bishop, John Arthur

BORN HULL 1884. SON OF GEORGE HENRY BISHOP (1851-1921) & ELIZA JANE BISHOP (1855-1941), OF 69 OSBORNE STREET, HULL. ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. SON OF A MASTER MARINER. HE MARRIED EDITH ANNIE SNOWDEN (1892-1971), AT HULL IN JUNE 1915. THEY LIVED AT 27 BRIDLINGTON STREET, FOUNTAIN ROAD, HULL, WITH THEIR TWO SONS, ARTHUR KENNETH BISHOP (1916-1990) AND JOHN THOMAS BISHOP (1918-2003). HE SERVED DURING THE WAR AS A MERCHANT SEAMAN. HE WAS LOST AT SEA ON 22ND AUGUST 1918, AGED 34. COMMEMORATED AT THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.
SS Prunelle, built by Bergsunds Mek. Verks., Stockholm in 1874 and owned at the time of her loss by The Shipping Controller (H. W. & C. M. Ezard), London, was a British steamer of 579 tons.On August 22nd, 1918, Prunelle, on a voyage from London to Dundee with a cargo of jute, was sunk by the German submarine UB-112 (Wilhelm Rhein), 2 miles southeast of Blyth. 12 persons were lost.
