Blackburn, Castle

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE CASTLE BLACKBURN 12/722. Born in October 1888, Castle was the eldest of seven children to Moses and Marion Blackburn. He married Hannah Orford in 1910 and the couple moved to London where they worked in Service, at 11 Smith Square, Westminster as a Butler and Housemaid respectively. They appear to have travelled back north on the birth of their first child, Cyril, for they are living at 1, Seaton Terrace, Seaton Street, Hull when war broke out. Castle was employed as a Waiter. His second child, Irene, was born that year too. Castle enlisted on 29th September 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. He was killed in action on 16th August 1916 and buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery; he was 27 years old.

HIS NAME IS ALSO INSCRIBED ON THE PILLARS INSIDE ST ST MARY’S CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.
