Born Beverley, 1895. Known as “Jim”. Son of Esther and the late S. Botterill, of 4 Norwood Far Grove, Beverley, Yorks. His father was named Snowball Botterill and had died in 1911. He enlisted in Beverley. Served with the 12th Hull Pals. He died of wounds on 15/11/1916, aged 21. His name is recorded on the Beverley WW1 memorial, with his brother Pte, ‘Jack’ Botterill, 44030, 7th Lincolnshire regiment, killed in action on 18/09/1918, aged 29. His name is commemorated on the Norwood Street Memorial, Beverley.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JIM BOTTERILL 21836. Born in 1895 Jim was one of eight children to Snowball and Esther Botterill of 4 Norwood Far Grove, Beverley. A Cassier by trade he enlisted in his hometown on 11th December 1915 joining first the 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, then being transferred to the 12th, 3rd Hull Pals, following his arrival in France in May 1916. Jim was fatally wounded during the 13th November attack on the ruins of Serre in the last desperate action of the disastrous Somme campaign. He was evacuated to No.3 Casualty Clearing Station where he died of wounds two days later. Jim Botterill is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery. He was 21 years old.
