Boughen, Arthur Middleton

Born Hull, 15/11/1882. Baptised at St Johns, Hull, on 15 Sep 1886. Son of James (Jemmy) Boughen (1855-1912) and Sarah Ann Sawney (1855-1930), of 64, Daltry Street, Hessle Road Hull. Son of a dock foreman. He had six sisters and three brothers, some of which died in infancy.

A Dock Labourer. Married at Hull in October 1906, aged 23. Husband of Ellen McKie (1886-1967). They had four children, James William, Arthur Stanley, Veronica and Leonard Middleton Boughen. They lived at 21, Neptune Street, Hessle Road Hull (1911 Census) and 57, Redbourne Street, Hessle Road, Hull (War Pension address).

He joined the Royal Naval Reserve, 1908. Served during the war as a Deck Hand. Discharged on 1 Feb 1919, with Tuberculosis. Died in Hull, on 27/09/1924, aged 41. Buried in an unmarked grave, at Hull Western Cemetery.

His son, Able Seaman, Leonard Boughen, served in the Merchant Navy during WW2 and was lost in the North Sea, on the “SS Empire Bell”, 15/09/1942, aged 27. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

His son James William Boughen emigrated to Australia and served in the Royal Australian Air Force during WW2.
