Bower, James

BORN HULL 1877. ENLISTED HULL. SON OF WILLIAM WHITWELL & ELIZABETH BOWER. ALSO LIVED 88 NORTHUMBERLAND AVENUE. OIL SEED PRESSER.

Dave Richardson writes 15/3/2013 – James Bower was born in the 4th Quarter of 1877, Sculcoates This would make him 45 in 1918 quite old I guess for the services but I can’t find another James Bower born in Hull between 1870 and 1900.
Father: William Whitwell Bower born 1850, died 1890; a cooper by trade
Mother Elizabeth Bower born 1846
James was one of 8 children born to William and Elizabeth (the others being: Walter, Alice, Lancelot, Rachel Ann, Frederick, Kate and Edith Ann who was 9 months old at the time of the 1891 census. The family where living at 4 Willow Terrace, York Street at that time.)
James married Harriet Ann Freeman in the third quarter of 1898. By the time of the 1901 census James and Harriet where living at 6 Dalton Street, Hannah Terrace and James’ trade was that of Oil Mill labourer. They had 2 child at this time Eliza age 2 and James A age 10 months.
By the time of the 1911 census the couple seem to have separated. James was lodging with his brother Lancelot at 88 Northumberland Avenue and Harriet is listed as a housekeeper to Albert Edwin Austin at 9 Gladys Grove Courtney Street. Albert is listed as an Oil Mill Labourer. Also listed at the same address as boaders are Eliza Bower (12), Walter Bower(8), Ada Bower (4) and William Edward Bower (4 months)
I’m fairly certain that this is the East Yorkshire Regiment soldier – R.I.P.
