Brand, John

BORN PRESTON, LANCS 1886. LIVED IN HULL. DOW AS POW. SON OF RICHARD BRAND ABOVE. NB: JOHN BRAND, RAMC – 59 WELBECK ST.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. Born in Preston, Lancashire in July 1886, John Brand was the eldest son of Richard and Emma Brand of 38 Lorne Street, Hull. A Wooden Box maker by trade, John had lost his father and younger brother, Sinclair, in 1911 and it must have been quite a wrench for Emma Brand to watch her eldest son ship off to fight for King and Country as part of the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 2nd Hull Pals. He served in Egypt before shipping for France in March 1916 where he fought on the Somme and at Oppy Wood before facing down the German Spring Offensive in March and April 1918. He was taken prisoner during the fighting and shipped back to the POW camps in Germany where he died on 1st July 1918. John Brand is buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery; he was 31 years old. Emma Brand lost her next youngest son, Daniel, in 1921. She lived another 14 years. It must have been quite a burden to carry.
