BORN HULL 1896. ENLISTED HULL. SON OF WILLIAM & ANN ABOVE 1901. KILLED SAVING AN INJURED MAN. BROTHER ALBERT WAS KILLED ON 1/7/16 AT THE SOMME.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE WILLIAM BRETT 12/1494. Born in 1896, William was one of three children to William and Ann Brett of 12 Hawthorn Terrace, Walcott Street, Hull. He enlisted in 1915 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals and his younger brother Albert followed him into the Colours joining the 7th Battalion. William was killed in action on 26th May 1916 while trying to save comrades injured during a raid on enemy trenches. He is buried in Sucrerie Military, a young man of 20. Albert was killed just over a month later on 1st July, the first day of the Somme.
