Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL SIDNEY ROBERT BROCKLESBY 13/500. Born in 1896, Sidney, or ‘Bob’ as he was known, was the third of eight children and eldest son of Aaron and Mary Brocklesby of 1 Romany Terrace, Ferries Street, Hedon Road, Hull. A Docker before the war he enlisted at City Hall originally joining the 13th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, “T’Others”, 4th Hull Pals, before transferring to the 11th when the two merged in February 1918. Bob was listed as missing during the Spring Offensive and later turned up a prisoner of war, much to the relief of his family who wrote letters to the army begging for news of his whereabouts. Their relief was shortlived. Bob died in Munster on 26th November 1918 having seen the war through and never made it home. He is buried in Hamburg Cemetery; he was 22 years old.
That brings us to the end of the 11th Battalion dead. I’m going to spend a few days catching up over on WordPress before rewinding right back to the start of the war all over again and starting on the 12th Battalion.
