BORN HORBURY, WAKEFIELD 15/07/1893. SON OF GEORGE EDWARD BROOKE & ELLEN GOLDTHORP BROOKE, AT CALDER GROVE, WAKEFIELD. HE JOINED THE ARMY ON 17/11/1911, AGED 18, ENLISTING IN WAKEFIELD. SERVED IN IRELAND AND SINGAPORE. RETURNED TO FRANCE FROM SINGAPORE ON THE OUTBREAK OF WAR. HE WAS INVALIDED BACK TO ENGLAND IN MARCH 1915. RETURNED TO FRANCE IN DECEMBER 1915. WOUNDED ON THE SOMME, ON 15/09/1916. HE MARRIED ELSIE MAY TOCK, IN HULL, ON 15/11/1916, AND THEY LIVED AT 127, BUCKINGHAM STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE RETURNED TO FRANCE, ON THE 25/05/1917, BEING SENT TO ITALY IN NOVEMBER 1917. HE WAS KILLED ON 14/12/1917, WHEN HIS BILLET WAS HIT BY SHELL. HE WAS 24. AND HAD BEEN DUE FOR THE PROMOTION ON THE SAME EVENING. HE IS BURIED AT OLD FARM CEMETERY, ITALY. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 15/01/1918. *

HIS DEATH IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HE IS BURIED AT GIAVERA BRITISH CEMETERY, ARCADE, ITALY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE NOBLY DID HIS DUTY & GAVE HIS LIFE FOR THOSE HE LOVED”
