BORN 1889. HOGSTHORPE, LINCOLNSHIRE. SON OF JOHN HORTON BROWN (1862-1944) & MARY ELLEN GILBERT (1868-1945), OF 31 BARNSLEY STREET, HULL. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS. A TIMBER SAWYER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 3 INCHES TALL, 136 LBS WEIGHT, 35 INCH CHEST. HIS WIFE EMMA ELLEN WEBSTER (1890-1955), LIVED AT 2 SCARBOROUGH TERRACE, BARNSLEY STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HIS WIFE’S NAME WAS TATTOOED ON HIS RIGHT ARM. ENLISTED HULL, ON 16/11/1914. JOINED THE 13th EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (HULL PALS). SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. DIED OF PNEUMONIA, AT HOME, ON 05/03/1919, AGED 30. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 4 YEARS AND 110 DAYS. BURIED AT HULL’S HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND TWO DAUGHTERS. HIS SON, JOHN HORTON BROWN, DIED OF WHOOPING COUGH, ON 16/08/1915, AGED 8 MONTHS.
HIS BROTHER, PTE, JOHN WILFRED BROWN, 13/1333, 13TH EYR, WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON THE SOMME ON 13/11/1916, AGED 19.
