BORN HULL 16/06/1892. SON OF HENRY CHAPLIN & GERTRUDE BROWN AT 26 , TYNE STREET, HULL. A FORMER ABLE SEAMAN, FOR THE WILSON SHIPPING LINE.

HE SERVED WITH THE ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE. LOST AT SEA, ON 26/06/1917, AGED 26. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST JOHN THE BAPTIST  CHURCH MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL. HIS FATHER AND TWO ALSO BROTHER SERVED.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 02/07/1917 & 26/06/1919.
On June 26th, 1917, the British navy trawler HMT Charles Astie was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-79 (Otto Rohrbeck), northeast of Fanad Point, Lough Swilly (barrage 117b) while escorting the steamer Hartland from Tory Island to Inishowen. All 16 crew died.
