Burnham MM, John Stainforth

BORN HULL 1887. ELDEST SON OF EDWARD BURNHAM & MARY ANN STAINFORTH OF 83 SWANN STREET, HULL ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. A FORMER RULLYMAN FOR THE NORTHEASTERN RAILWAYS. HE ENLISTED AT NEWCASTLE. SERVED IN THE 12TH/13TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. HE WAS KILLED RESCUING A WOUNDED COMRADE, ON 27/05/1918, AGED 31. AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL FOR HIS GALLANTRY, ATTENDING THE WOUNDED DURING A HEAVY BOMBARDMENT AND GAS ATTACK. HE WAS UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS FATHER, EDWARD.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE SOISSONS MEMORIAL, AISNE, FRANCE.
