Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE ALBERT EDWARD BURTON 22617. Born 4th September 1884, Albert was the seventh of nine children to Charles and Eleanor Burton of 7 Rydal Terrace, Lansdowne Street, Hull. A Cab Driver by trade, Albert was a reluctant soldier to begin with. Joining when he was forced to, he attested at City Hall on 3rd May 1916 originally in the 14th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He had four incidents of overstaying passes during training, and went AWOL just before he shipped for France, but was caught, charged and sentenced to 28 days in prison. Arriving in France on 23rd January 1917 he joined the 10th Battalion and was charged with not complying with an order on 3rd March when he refused to get out of bed after revely. He was wounded in April and was shipped back to Sheffied to recover meaning he missed Oppy Wood which potentially saved his life. He arrived back with the 10th in July 1917 to what must have been a very different battalion to the one he left. Albert was killed in action on 19th February 1918 as the Germans increased their shelling and trench raids in preparation for their Spring Offensive which was just days away; he is buried at Roclincourt Military Cemetery; he was 33 years old.
