Buttle, Robert Wellage

Private, Robert Wellage Buttle, 8th EYR

Son of Thomas Buttle (1862-1940) and Sarah Elizabeth Huck (1871-1952), of 65, Manor House, Chapmangate, Pocklington, Yorkshire. He had three brothers and four sisters.

A Professional soldier when war began. He enlisted in Pocklington. Served in the 8th East Yorkshire Regiment, “E” Company. Posted to France, on 15/01/1915. Killed in action, on 18/06/1916, aged 28.

Buried in Belgium. His grave inscription reads, “LOVING MEMORIES CLING AROUND THE GRAVE OF ONE WE LOVED BUT COULD NOT SAVE”

His brother, Private, James William Buttle, served as, 116753, Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment and survived the war.
