Buttle, William Jonas

BORN HULL 1881. ENLISTED HULL. WIFE LILLY & CHILDREN. (HDM 10/7/17 & 14/7/17) JOINED THE NORFOLK REGIMENT IN NOVEMBER 1899. HAD 18 YEARS CONTINUOUS SERVICE, INCLUDING INDIA, SOUTH AFRICA AND THROUGHOUT THE BOER WAR. HE RETIRED TO WORK AT RANK, CLARENCE FLOUR MILLS, HULL. AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR, HE PROCEEDED TO FRANCE AND WAS WOUNDED IN 1914. INVALIDED HOME FROM THE DARDANELLES, IN NOVEMBER 1915, WITH TYPHOID FEVER. HE RETURNED TO FRANCE AND WAS WOUNDED A SECOND TIME IN MARCH 1917. HE WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE WELCH FUSILIERS. KILLED IN ACTION ON 16TH JUNE 1917, AGED 36. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON THE 14TH JULY 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
