Private Harry Button (1888-1917)
Harry Button, the son of Son of Rachel Ann Dove, of 2, Well Place, Well Lane, Beverley, Yorks. He was born in London on 17 February 1888. In 1901 he and his younger siblings John and Elizabeth were living in Beverley with his mother and stepfather Rachel and Alfred Dove.
Prior to his enlistment in the Army he had moved to Leeds where he worked as a carriage cleaner for the N.E.R (North Eastern Railway). He enlisted on 22 November 1915 and was posted to the Royal Field Artillery 3/1st West Riding Brigade in 1916, later he was posted to the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was unmarried.
Harry Button was killed in action in France on 9 April 1917 aged 27 during the East Yorkshire Regiment’s offensive to capture the Hindenburg Line. He is buried in the Cojeul British Cemetery, Saint-Martin-sur-Cojeul, Department du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
