Camplin, George

Born Hull 1893. Fourth son of John Henry Camplin (1858-1933) and Eliza Jane Smith (1857-1931), of 104, Adelaide Street, Hull (Army address). Son of a Shipwright And Carpenter. He had three brothers and three sisters.

Employed as a Labourer. Described as 5 foot, 6 inches tall, 139 lbs weight, 36-38 inch chest, grey eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion, Church of England religion.

Enlisted at Hull, on 6 October 1914, joining the 3rd Hull Pals Battalion. Served as Private, 12/1010, East Yorkshire Regiment.

While in Training at the Dalton Army Camp, he complained of depression, pains to the head, sleeplessness, & tried to strangle himself. Also sullen, talking to himself, slovenly in dress and indifferent to surroundings.

He was committed to the Hull City Asylum, Willerby, Hull, on 15th April 1915. Discharged with delusional Insanity, on 14 January 1916. He had served in the army for one year and 101 days. Awarded the Silver War Badge (No: 501669).

He never recovered and died at the De La Pole Mental hospital, Hull, in January 1965, aged 71.

His eldest brother, Private John Henry Camplin, 8999, 1st EYR, was killed in action on 21 Sep 1915, aged 30. Another brother, Sgt, James Camplin, 11/607, EYR, also served in WW1.
