Cartledge, George Ely

BORN HULL 1891. SON OF GEORGE AND SARAH ELLEN CARTLEDGE. ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS.

HE MARRIED BERTHA FAWCETT, AT HULL, IN 1914. HIS WIFE BERTHA, LIVED AT 230, WATERLOO STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS) AND 25 PARK VIEW, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL. HE WORKED AS A PAINTER FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS.

HE JOINED THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE TERRITORIALS, ON 17/05/1909. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 4 INCHES TALL, 36-38 INCH CHEST. HE ENLISTED IN HULL WHEN WAR BEGAN. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 17/04/1915. WOUNDED BY GUN SHOT, IN THE THIGH, ON 03/05/1915. INVALIDED TO ENGLAND. RETURNED TO FRANCE, ON 01/08/1916. POSTED TO THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRES, ON 01/09/1916, AS LANCE CORPORAL, 27887, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 16/09/1916, AGED 25. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, BERTHA. THEY HAD NO CHILDREN.

HE IS COMMEMORATED AT ST MARYS CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.
