Chapman, Herbert

BORN HULL 1896. SON OF GEORGE CHAPMAN & HANNAH DIXON, 2 HOPPS TERRACE, ST PAULS STREET AND AT 41A PRINCES ROAD AND 59 NEWLAND AVENUE. ONE OF TEN CHILDREN AND SIX BROTHERS. HIS FATHER ALSO SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT DURING THE WAR. HERBERT WORKED AS A LABOURER. DESCRIBED IN HIS ARMY RECORDS, AS NEARLY 5 FOOT 7 INCHES TALL, 33 INCH CHEST, 101 LBS, GREY EYES, FAIR HAIR AND FRESH COMPLEXION. HE ENLISTED HULL, ON 8/04/1915, JOINING THE RAMC. TRANSFERRED TO THE ROYAL BERKSHIRE REGIMENT ON 8/06/1915. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 01/12/1915. WOUNDED BY SHRAPNEL IN THE BACK, HIP AND THIGH, THREE WEEKS LATER, ON 22/12/1915. INVALIDED HOME TO ENGLAND ON 30/01/1916. DISCHARGED AS UNFIT FOR ACTIVE SERVICE ON 12/09/1916. PARALYSIS OF THE RIGHT LEG. HE HAD SERVED FOR ONE YEAR AND 159 DAYS.
HE DIED ON 11/06/1919, AGED 23. AND IS BURIED AT HULL WESTERN CEMETERY. ETCHED ON HIS CWGC ARMY GRAVE ARE THE WORDS “PEACE AFTER PAIN”.
HIS FATHER SERVED WITH EYR DURING THE WAR. HIS OLDER BROTHER, PTE, WALTER CHAPMAN, EYR, DIED ON 7/11/1918, JUST BEFORE THE WAR ENDED.
