Chapman, Walter Richard

BORN HULL 1898. SON OF GEORGE CHAPMAN & HANNAH DIXON, 2 HOPPS TERRACE, ST PAULS STREET AND AT 41A PRINCES ROAD AND 59 NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL. ONE OF TEN CHILDREN AND SIX BROTHERS. HIS FATHER ALSO SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT DURING THE WAR. WALTER ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 1ST BATTALION, EYR. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, FOUR DAYS BEFORE THE WAR ENDED, ON 7/11/1918, AGED 20. HE IS BURIED IN FRANCE, AT DOURLERS COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, NORD, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE RESTS WITH ENGLAND’S HEROES”
HIS BROTHER, HERBERT CHAPMAN, DIED IN HULL AS A RESULT OF WAR INJURIES ON 19/06/1919. THEY LEFT BROTHERS, HAROLD, FREDERICK AND JOHN CHAPMAN.
