BORN HULL 18/09/1895. SON OF JOSEPH P. CHARLTON & MARY JANE WADDINGHAM (1858-1944), OF 20, WATERLOO STREET, HULL. EDUCATED AT ST PAUL’S SCHOOL, DRAINSIDE, HULL. A FORMER RECKITTS, EMPLOYEE, AT MORLEY STREET, WORKS. ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 25/10/1915. KILLED AT MERICOURT, ON 20/02/1918, AGED 22. HIS DETAILS ARE RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4, PAGE 52.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE GEORGE CHARLTON 14/60. Born on 18th September 1895, George was the second son of Joseph Charlton of 20 Waterloo Street, Hull. He was educated at St.Paul’s Boarding School, Drainside and enlisted on 25th October 1915 joining the 14th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment before being transferred to the 11th. George was killed in action on 20th Ffebruary 1918 at Mericourt as the Germans raided front line trenches in preparation for the coming onslaught, their Spring Offensive, designed as one big all-or-nothing blow to break through the Allied lines and force a surrender before the Americans could arrive in France. George is buried at Roclincourt Military Cemetery; he was 22 years old. Between March 24th and April 28th the 11th Battalion lost 144 men.
