BORN MIDDLESBOROUGH, 1893. SON OF MARGARET & THOMAS CLARE, OF 7 BELTS PLACE, HUMBER STREET, HULL. HE HAD TWO SISTER. A LABOURER AND FISH BOX MAKER. ENLISTED HULL, 10/11/1915. ARRIVED FRANCE, 23/07/1916. SERVED IN THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, 10TH PLATOON, MACHINE GUN SECTION. SHOT IN THE ABDOMEN. DIED OF WOUNDS, AT VILLERS FAUGON HOSPITAL, 05/04/1918, AGE 25. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, MARGARET. BURIED VILLERS-FAUCON COMMUNAL CEMETERY, ON THE SOMME. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “REST IN THE LORD”.

HIS OLDER BROTHER, JOHN THOMAS CLARE WAS KILLED ON 25/02/1917. HIS MOTHER HAD LOST HER ONLY TWO SONS.
