BORN BEVERLEY 1870. LIVED HULL. SON OF WILLIAM CLARK (1843-1917) & ANNIE ASH (1848-1917).

HE MARRIED AT HULL IN 1892. HIS WIFE MARY HESTER (1867-1945), LIVED AT, 4. PHOENIX COURT, WATERLOO STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND LATER 24. DERBY STREET, WITH THEIR FIVE CHILDREN.

A FORMER SOLDIER. HE ENLISTED IN 1891, SERVING WITH THE 3RD HUSSARS. IN CIVILIAN LIFE HE WAS A STEVEDORE’S FOREMAN FOR MESSRS. M LAYDON & SON, HULL DOCKS.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 37487, 2ND EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 15/01/1915. KILLED AT YPRES, ON 05/02/1915, AGED 45. HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE PRINTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 19TH MARCH 1915. * THE HULL TIMES GIVES HIS ADDRESS AS BOURNEMOUTH STREET, HULL. LEAVING A WIDOW AND 5 CHILDREN.

BOTH HIS PARENTS DIED IN 1917. HIS SON, JOHN BERNARD CLARK, WAS ALSO KILLED IN ACTION, ON 05/10/1918.
Hull Daily Mail October 9th 1918 records: Pte. John Bernard Clark (31048), E.Y. was killed in action on October 5th last. Deceased, who was only 21 years of age, had served 3 and a half years with the Colours. His father, Pte.Herbert Clark, was killed in action on February 5th 1915.”
1901 Census – Herbert T. Clarke (born in Beverley) recorded as living at 5 Robinson Court, Hull with his wife May (? Mary), 2 Daughters Florence and Cathleen age 8 & 5 and son John age 3. By the time of the 1911 census Herbert and Mary together with son Michael, born 1903 and daughter Annie born 1905 are living at 5 Feather Lane, Church Street, Hull. Florence and Kathleen are living at 2 Cave Terrace, Cave Street with their aunt Bridget Barker. No sign of John, yet. According to the CWGC Herbert T Clarke 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regt, Service No. 3/7487 died on 05/02/1915 and is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. His medal card shows that he entered France on on 15/01/1915
There’s a photo of H.T. Clark on the front page of the Hull Daily News dated March 17 1915 and in the Hull Times on 22nd May 1915. Both father and son are listed on the Roll of Honour at St Charles Borromeo, Hull.
