BORN HULL 1896. ONLY SON OF CHARLES & LEAH WINIFRED CLIFFE, OF 82, MERSEY STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL AND 3, BYRON AVENUE, WESTCOTT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES). SON OF AN ENGINEER LABOURER. ELDEST OF TWO CHILDREN . BROTHER OF DOROTHY MAY CLIFFE. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED FOR OSMOND & SON, STATIONARY SHOP, IN GRIMSBY.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL INTO THE EYR CYCLISTS AT THE START OF THE WAR. TRANSFERRED, AS PRIVATE, 27268, 11TH EAST LANCASHIRE REGIMENT. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 13TH JULY 1916 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS BURIED ON THE SOMME AT BERTRANCOURT MILITARY CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THAT HE WAS WORTHY FOR WHOM WE SHOULD DO THIS”
