L/CPL ALBERT COLLINSON 12/877. Born in Lidgate, County Durham in 1877 Albert was the eldest of seven children to Joseph and Alice Collinson of Stockerby Grove, Durham. The 1911 Census has him living in Doncaster and working as a Miner, but he was a Labourer living at 16 Eliza’s Terrace, West Parade, Hull by the time Britain declared war on Germany on 4th August 1914. Having previously served in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry, Albert’s military experience stood him in good stead and he was promoted to Lance Corporal by the time the Pals arrived in Egypt in December 1915. He was wounded in the head by a grenade blast on 16th April 1916 and just like Thomas Wright and Edward Hadlow who suffered the self-same fate that night, he was withdrawn to 4th Casualty Clearing Station. Alas, just as his comrades had succumbed to their wounds so did Albert, a full three days of agony later. He is buried in Beauval Communal Cemetery; he was 40 years old and left a wife Annie Maria.
