YOUNGEST OF FOUR BROTHERS, WHO ALL SERVED IN THE WAR. A BRUSH MAKER. HE ENLISTED IN HESSLE. FORMERLY, GUNNER, 140775, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. HE TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 26166, 18TH AND 1ST BATTALION, LANCASHIRE FUSILIERS. HE WAS AWARDED MILITARY MEDAL (MM) & BAR, FOR BRAVERY. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 17/10/1918, AGED 25. HISARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFTTO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, ANNIE.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE HESSLE ROLL OF HONOUR, ALL SAINTS PARISH CHURCH.
HE IS BURIED IN BELGIUM, AT DADIZEELE NEW BRITISH CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “SAFE IN GOD’S KEEPING”.
