Cowing, John William

Born Newcastle, 1884. Son of Matthew and Elizabeth Cowing.

A Ship’s Fireman. Described as 5 foot, 6 inches tall, 137 lbs weight, 34-37 inch chest, blue eyes, brown hair, Tattoos.

He married Elsie May Rout at Hull, in 1914. Husband of Elsie May Cowing, of 21, Woodhouse Street, Hedon Road, Hull (CWGC address). They had one son, John, born on 26th February 1916.

He enlisted in Hull, on 24th December 1912. Formerly, Private, 9981 & 1473, East Yorkshire Regiment. Transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, 2nd Bn. Died of wounds, on 28/04/1918, aged 34, at the 47th CCS France. Buried in France, his grave reads, IN MEMORY OF MY DEAR HUSBAND FROM HIS LOVING WIFE.

His army effects were left to his widow. She re-married, became Ethel May Bayley and moved to Bristol.
