BORN HULL 1890. SON OF BENJAMIN & MARY ELIZABETH CRAVEN. MARRIED SEPTEMBER 1916. WIFE ELSIE (NEE BROWN) CRAVEN, LIVED AT 64 GOULTON STREET, HULL AND 3 , WELBECK STREET, HULL (NAVAL ADDRESS). IN APRIL 1916, HE RESCUED THE GERMAN CREW OF THE ZEPPELIN, L15 WHICH HAD DITCHED IN THE NORTH SEA. (HDM, 13/04/1916). HE DROWNED, ON 21/06/1918, AGED 28. AS A RESULT OF A SUBMARINE ATTACK.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE TRINITY HOUSE SCHOOL MEMORIAL. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 01/08/1918.

SS Montebello, built by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Hull in 1911 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 4324 tons. On June 21st, 1918, Montebello, on a voyage from London to Hampton Roads, was sunk by the German submarine U-100 (Degenhart von Loë), 320 miles W1/2N from Ushant (Ouessant). 41 persons were lost, including the following Hull seamen.
