Credland, Arthur

BORN HULL 1895. PARENTS JOHN WILLIAM CREDLAND (1870-1927) & HARRIET GRAVES, AT 8, WALTHAM TERRACE, WALKER STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. SON OF A TRAVELLING BASKET MAKER. HE WORKED AS AN APPRENTICE BASKET MAKER. HIS BROTHERS, JOHN WILLIAM & GEORGE ARTHUR CREDLAND ALSO SERVED IN THE WAR AT THIS ADDRESS.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 17/10/1915. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 1.5 INCHES TALL, 37 INCH CHEST, AND ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. SERVED AS PRIVATE 4652, WITH THE 3RD//4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENTS. BASED AT LONDESBOROUGH STREET BARRACKS. DUE TO BE POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 07/04/1916. HE WAS DELAYED WITH ‘SCABIES’ AT SOUTHAMPTON HOSPITAL. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 17/01/1917. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 28419, ‘B’ COMPANY, WITH THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. SHOT IN THE ABDOMEN. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 09/04/1917, AGED 22. BURIED IN FRANCE.

UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, HARRIET. HE LEFT SIX BROTHERS, AND TWO SISTERS AT THIS ADDRESS. HE LEFT EXTENDED FAMILY AT 6 IRELAND TERRACE, WALCOTT STREET AND 6 GLENCOE STREET, HULL.
HIS NAME WAS RECORDED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL AT ST THOMAS CHURCH, CAMPBELL STREET, WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN AN AIR RAID DURING WW2.
HE IS BURIED AT DUISANS BRITISH CEMETERY, ETRUN. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE SLEEPS WITH BRITAIN’S HEROES IN THE WATCHFUL CARE OF GOD EVER IN THOUGHT”
